After I added covers to 9 movies in this way (sometimes I also dragged and dropped the JPG file into the fan art window as well) and 4 of the movies: Fight Club Independence Day Lost In Space The Breakfast Club all share the same images in the fan art section, and these four are all named incorrectly (99-Independence-Day-Kl_fanart_1, 99-Independence-Day-Kl_fanart_2, etc.) Deleting the fan art from the records doesn't help, because they reattach themselves again in the same way if I repeat this process.
