In this thread I will write thinks I found and don't understand in XMM 8. Maybe someone has an answer for me. If I have a new question I will add a new no. here.

1: Movie Editor: For what is under "Video" the "Media Language" and how does it work? -> it's a bug
2: Movie Editor: For what is under "Main" the "Catalog No"?
3: Movie Editor: For what is under "Main" the "Catagory"?
4: I don't understand how "Update from the web" and "re-Update" are working in the movie editor. I need the option "update from the web without changing the existing informations" and "update from the web with changing the existing information". Does anybody have an idea?
5: Movie Editor: under "Audio" in "Add Audio Stream" how can I change there the language names that I can in the dropdown select my own ones (I like to change them to German because in the moment it's all mixed up)?
6: Movie Editor: under "Video" for what is "Media Label"? -> it's a bug
7: Movie Editor: under "Audio" you can add Streams and you can select the language, why you have the language twice than?
8: Movie Editor: Is there a possibility that the Editor doesn't close if I get informations from the web?
9: Movie Editor: under "Audio" what are you writing in "Audio Codec" and what in "Audio Format"? -> I put it into bugs
10: Movie Editor: under "Audio" how do I know if this is a "Dolby Codec" DTS is not Dolby or?

Don't know what do you mean by that?

But if I only select the language which is with the movie and have added the stream/language which is in the file, I don't know which format has the selected language. I think I do it the other way round.

I wouldn't remove the codec field but fill it properly (if it's empty it's no problem).

'fcourse.

The language you can set in the audio stream grid should be the one of - well - the actual stream (MediaLanguage field in the AudioLinks table). Dubbed or not doesn't count here.

Now the language entry in the multi-select listbox relates to the OriginalLanguage field in the Movies table. If one would do things by the book that field should therefore list the "official" movie language(s) not the one it was dubbed into for your viewing pleasure.

And if you write 5.1 you have the chanels twice to?

It's even more confusing given the fact that MediaInfo can't help you much when the stream doesn't give away the needed information, for example:

AAC [Advanced Audio Coding] (the -> Format (!)) will usually get recognized but it's written into the -> Codec field.

i. e. NeroEnc as the actual encoder used will - in most of the cases - not get mentioned in the stream info and therefor we will not know what actually should be in the -> Codec field.

PS: Unluckily things get quite a bit messier yet with the various (mis-) interpretations of what a container is or might be ...

Audio Codec: e.g. MPEG-1 Layer 2, AC3, DTS, PCM, DTS-HD
Audio Format: e.g. Dolby Digital 5.1

sooooo much magic
I think there is somewhere a little

Thanks again for your answers, that makes thinks clearer... or not

I updated my lovely lists. What is twice in the program is for me a bug.

I didn't find the "Media Language" in Access too.

The audio stuff is no longer available in the "Movies" table but in the "AudioLinks" table. The "media language" field in audio tab really seem to be a dead end. I critisize this since more than a half year.
Also "media label" and "disks" in video tab doesn't make sense any longer as this info has moved to the disks tab.

under "Video" for what is "Media Label"?

It's the name of the disk.

Deutsch ist für mich natürlich auch einfacher but I use the program now in english because it's easier to get the english names for the points I will write somethings.

What do you thing does it make a different if I write in the german forum the names I found in the english.ini?

Nah, now that things got started in English it's probably better to carry on that way.

By default it will contain the descriptor of the source media. Like the name of the hard disk you did read the backup movie file from.

You're right, it does only work for the other language fields on the audio tab but not for "Media Language". The list there seems to be auto-populated by some programming magic - evil magic.

At least you can type in something - and, if MediaInfo found something in the files' stream info it will be written into the field correctly.

It doesn't work at all 'cause there seems to be no target field to store what you set there. So don't expect me to explain it... Presumably it's a left over from the old days. You shall now set this information in the Audio tab.

2: Movie Editor: For what is under "Main" the "Catalog No"?

The field description goes as follows: "10 MediaID ovvero l'ID del supporto, sia esso CD,DVD o altro, sarà quello generale"

There are different usage scenarios possible:

  • If you come from a different cataloging software you can import the previous ID to Catalog No. while XMM can create it's unique MovieIDs.

  • You can have duplicate Catalog Numbers (XMM doesn't enforce uniqueness on the Catalog No. field). This for instance could be useful to group different versions of the same movie (like a VHS, a DVD R1 and a Blu-Ray edition).
It may also help to organize a (private) lending system if you have multiple copies of the same movie.

  • Since it's a text field you can even create Catalog No. like DVD-001 or Blu-Ray_001 and the like.

  • Note: if you use it with numbers only - like when you've started with your own IDs like described in the first bullet point XMM offers a function to add zeros in front of your Catalog Numbers so you can simulate an alphanumeric sorting [Tools] -> [Collection Maintenance] ...

I don't know what it was originally intended for but I think it's very handy. Just imagine some categorization you consider to be helpful and set up a list accordingly. [Tools] -> [Edit Lists] ...

Here at my place I use it to differentiate certain content like TV movies, Feature films, Documentaries, Short Movies, TV series, TV mini-series etc.

Me neither.

Update
Lesson learnt: If you do other things in between replying to a forum post Mawu will have answered it already.
Mawu Posted - 28 Jul 2013 : 12:58:32
@Saphir

1: Imho this data field is obsolete as you have the media language info now in the table with the audio streams
2: similar to the movieID you can sort movies according to a number; in contrary to movieid cattalogNr has no primary key, which means that two or more movies can have the same catalogNr.
3: it's up to you to define categories
4: "update from web"-> new search, "re-update" -> search according to the scripts/links stored in the web tab; import options can be configured in "Dateien -> Optionen -> MagicScript"

Bye Byte
Mawu
