Well aside from my last post - which I still think is a good idea for EMM to have it's own simplistic media centre view mode.
A plugin front end for MS media centre (Vista & 2005) so that movies can be browsed and played from the media centre interface (utilising the remote control) would be brilliant.
This would also raise the profile of your software incredibly - to my knowledge this would be unique to your software.
Certainly here in the UK media centre is gaining a lot of users in the last 12 months. I have been using it for nearly 3 years and can tell you that it is maturing nicely into a very usuable product.
I have even surprised myself recently by updating my media centre to Vista (I'm surprised because I don't rate Vista in general). In this case at least on the hardware I am using, Vista is more solid than 2005 rollup 2 ever was. Codec setup has also been interesting to say the least.
But again, I really struggle using EMM when far away from the screen. I will continue using EMM as I believe it is the best out there, but it still needs a few features that will turn it into a killer app for those of us who want an electronic interface for movie selection etc.
One feature still missing is the global codec update, here is why I so desperately want this feature:
When I first started ripping and encoding my DVD collection I really didn't know much about what I was doing so I encoded at a heavily cropped resolution (500 to 600 x [vertical given by aspect ratio])with a very keen quality factor (low bitrate). In the last couple of years I have replaced most of these with either full DVD resolution encodes (720x[vertical given by aspect ratio]) at higher bitrates. I have also experimented with upscaling of DVD's to 1280x720 (720HD) with a lot od success.
Now I am about to embark on x264 experimentation with a view of again re-encoding all 1300 (or so) of my DVD's.
Needless to say that I don't want to have to import all 1300 movies again (or have to select each one manually to get it's codec info updated). I just want to press a button to get EMM to do that for me - the "update codecs" button that as of yet has not been implemented!
Anyway I'm starting to ramble. EMM is good and I thank and appreciate all of Alessio's efforts, but it has the potential to be truly great with going that extra mile with a couple of new main features and some tweaks and polish here and there.
I notice that Alessio has not had a major update in a couple of months now, I hope he is still interested in his baby and has the dedication to turn it into the killer app that AV enthusiasts have been waiting for.
Keep up the great work Alessio, it is appreciated :)
Cheers, Laffer.

Posted - 20 Aug 2007 : 12:03:28 Hi Laffer!
I have not update XMM for some months because I was really busy at work, but you can be sure I am still working on XMM and I will do for years! :-)
I have try to make the integration for Media Center, but I think that the best solution for me is to make an "internal" media center (like in 4.8 release)
About the "update codecs" function, I will try to make it soon too, should be quite simple.
Thank you again,
Alessio |
