I've got a couple of questions/suggestions because I am new to this program and I am not sure I know all the features entirely.
First I would like to rename the folders containing the movies just like the movie file rename so that I can have the Rating/Genre on the movie folder. With the same respect I would like to be able to put the GENRE in the file/folder name but not the whole word just the FIRST letter of the genre, cause putting the whole word will make the file name huge.
My other question is whether it is possible to parse all the information you downloaded from the internet to the file it self, like Right Clicking the file> Properties > Details and parse all the info to the file, like Title/Subtitle/Genre/Rating etc etc.

I also request a folder renaming tool, similar to the already existing file renaming function. It would be very useful as it would facilitate browsing movies on a harddisk with all kinds of media players that you can simply connect to usb storage devices. I hope it will be included soon (as Alessio stated, it would be an easy thing to do). Thank you very much! |

I use this for my renaming functions

You could use it as it does batch renaming and you can configure it for specific tasks and keep them saved to repeat.
Ale--the source code is free..you may find it useful to call this app from within EMM as an additional function?
Ant Renamer is a free (really free, i.e. the source code is available) program that makes easier the renaming of lots of files and folders by using specified settings. It supports Unicode names.

Where you have issues with naming conventions at a windows level, you could have a list of user intervention required files or folders. Again, when Ember media manager was a working product, it handled this very well.
Just like everyone else who requires a media/movie manager its usually because the collections have grown substantially. Out of my entire collection movie titles with prohibited characters would number as the minority. Considering how XMM already knows how to do a lookup on sanitized folder/file name for the movie folder where you have manually renamed it, I don't see why that would be a reason why you couldn't add this function. Why would I use a piece of software to "manage" my collection if I have to manually perform tasks that could otherwise be performed by the manager?
For now, this is a product I purchased hoping it would provide a function only to find I didn't read the fine print that it was file names only. I'll keep checking the product updates every now and then to see if it gets added otherwise I will consider this just a lesson learned to pay more attention in future....

The one big problem with renaming folders or files to that of a Movie Title is that movie titles can contain characters that file systems (like Windows) don't permit in file or folder names.For example : / \ # are just a few. In addition to character limitations, you also have length limitation. Meaning that the total of all of the characters in the file name and folder structure has a limit. I can't remember the exact amount but from the drive letter to the end of the file name can only be a hundred and some characters long.
Anyways, I have almost 2,000 Movies and TV shows (all on HDD) and I've hit just about every character and naming issue you can imagine. The best thing to do is to stay away from having XMM trying to deal with those issues and leave it up to the user to name their files & folders to whatever works best for them and their environment. Staying out of the file & folder management area makes XMM more portable across platforms as well as across versions of the same OS.

The ability to rename folders like Ember MM does would be a very useful tool. In fact, this is the only reason why I purchased XMM only to find it does file names only.
I dont personally care for having XMM sort movies into different folder structures based on genres etc... I believe you should leave that to the library functions of your media player/centre. But Ember has a cool function with the "bulk renamer" where you can do a bulk rename for both files and folders.
For example, I use "Movie Name (year) for the folder name, and then "Move Name (1080P/720P/480P etc..) for the file name.
If it can all be tied in so that the renaming function uses the correct movie title from the online lookup (i.e. remove "scene" or web site stuff from the file name/folder name) then I think we would have a winner. |

Cheers Ale, what I would like to have for my collection is a folder for every movie that would include all the info one is interested like genre,year,director,rating etc and then within the folder the actual file name would have other info like codec,minutes,resolution. I guess the parsing info to the actual file requires alot of effort, is it possible though? |

As you can see that I don't have known about the FileRename function I don't have any movies on my HD.
But as you have explained I think that it would be a good idea, too.
Let's wait what Ale says as he is the only programmer on XMM... |

Well it does rename the actual movie file (Advanced Tools>Collection Maintenance>Movie File Rename) but it cant rename the folders I guess. The file rename function has been very helpful to me, as I am using XMM to rename all the movie files to a nice readable layout of movies in order to read them from media players or xbox/ps3 etc.
It would be a nice addition to have folder rename as well, because if you have movies that use subtitles (and you need several subtitle languages) then you are likely to have the movies in individual folders with the subs included in the folder. I am using a similar program to XMM for music management and it has this folder rename function which has helped alot in organizing the layout of the collection.
In addition, the parsing of the info from the XMM to the actual file properties would be awesome, as some media players/xbox have a function that you can view the info of the movie file but that is always empty since no one actually bothers using it, BUT I am just saying that it would be a nice addition to have.
I believe the folder renaming is easily plausible, now the info parsing would require a bit of extra work but it doesnt sound impossible? What do you think, would you consider these ideas for future development?
I hope I explained the ideas fairly understandably. |

No, to all. XMM doesn't change anything on the movie files.
The prog doesn't write any tag nor does it rename files or folders. |
