After trying to deinstall the old xMM 4.8 and work exclusively only with the newest xmm version I switched back remorseful to the old version (xMM 5.x I only use for multi-download of covers at the moment). New xMM has very nice features, a up-to-date interface but it's making me mad in many ways:

1. All configuration things are stored in the registry. As I use an installation of my database on an external HD on different pc it's a pain. For backups it's not perfect, too. When I deinstall XMM and reinstall it with a new version it seems that the deinstall was not complete at all (old config seems to be conserved)

2. In the Temp folder (in XMM folder) cover images are stored during the work with XMM and not deleted after shutdown. As I use HQ scans this images waste disk space (> 100 MB).

3. Data fields: I like the rating stars very much but:
- 01.01.1900 problem: in old xMM I can see directly all empty fields, but in new version I have to take a closer look if there is a real date entry or just the dummy value
- media year: why can I type in "19000101" and not "01.01.1900" or at least "01011900" (here only 1011900 is possible). No problem in xMM 4.8
- Price: no currency possible (€, $ etc.)
- when I want to delete for example the data entry for price or media year completely this deletion is not stored at all (old value remains).
- movie length: as it's possible to download extended movie length info with IMDB script in xMM 4.8 (country-specific, alternate versions) it's a downgrade when you only have the limited info in 5.x
- new dvd features field is not usable or how should I store all the dvd features info in one single line
- there should be more data fields with comboboxes (Country, Codec, Resolution, Audio, Movie categorie) and a button next to the data fields where you can open an list manager to edit combobox entries (like in 4.8)
- for movie/trailer files or media label there is no browser button to search for

6. New xMM has problems with some scripts for movie titles containing special characters like ä,ö,ü or ß (see corresponding threads in forum). BTW: it would be useful to have some tutorial for
the conversion of old xMM scripts because now it's at least for me a time consuming procedure (I really don't know exactly what I have to keep in mind - just trial and error)

7. Main window is always blocked after opening of a further window (like edit window). I like to browse through my collection, copy some data and paste it inside a field in the open edit window. Not possible with 5.X but with 4.8. And you can only minimize the open edit window, main window is fixed in fullscreen.

8. Cover manager: I'm only able to see 4 covers at once (less than in xMM 4.8, important when you download a couple of images and have to sort out doublettes) and can't extend the size of the cover manager window. Some useful features are missing: mark/unmark covers, delte marked covers, zoom function to increase the size of the picture, link to cover print.
BTW: cover manager is very slow on my pc; you should think about adding drag&drop to sort images; file name is cut in the display; in cover print there should be at least a simple dvd cover printout

9.Missing RESET button (or how can I easly make a reset of the grid display?)

10. movie id renumbering: Ability to simply eliminate gaps in collection numbering is missing

11. Although some filter options are back (in mini statistic) and there is a search panel but it's (at the moment) no real improvement compared with 4.8. On my systems the left panel has to be very small which means that the search field is verys small, too.

12. You should try to reduce complexity also in comparison to 4.8: only few clicks to reach a function (it has become better during the last releases), only one thumbnail view (and not three as in 4.8) and in future only one moviecard type (not three as in 4.8 and now in 5.x)

New features of new release:

Thumbnail view: new thumbnail view is very slow in generating the thumbnails but which much better display quality. Beside sorting and additional info options I would like to see an option to change the size of the thumbnails

Fullscreen Mode: should be more like old mediacenter or movie launcher addon. Here only the icon bar is hidden.

Bye bye
Mawu

Hi Guys,

Seem that The best solution is make an INI file for configuration too. Users will select if store the configuration in window registry or in the INI file.

I will work on this in future.

@darjanp

That is supposed to be with every good program.

That's a matter of opinion. I know dozens of good programs that don't need to store config data in registry (and these are no Mac programs where you have no registry).

quote:
If not, every time you install a new version, you have to set it up again (setting, name of custom fields etc.)

But with xMM 4.8 it works perfectly. All info is stored in a config file. Easy to backup (!), easy to use with portable harddisk or usb stick. I only want to have an adequate possibility to save my configuration outside the registry.

This should stay as it is.

Hey Alessio,
a little suggestion at point 6 (the problem with special german characters). In this thread: http://www.binaryworks.it/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1764 cluster guess that the cause of this problem is the endcoding used by .NET for the HTTP-command "GET". Please take a look at this! Thanks!

See you

Hi Mawu!

Thank you for this topic, I will use it for work on next release.

You are right, the new XMM need to be fixed in some parts, I am working hard for this, and your suggestions help me a lot.

About Fullscreen mode, this is NOT the Media Center mode, I have start to work to Media Center mode but I need more time to complete it.

Thank you!

Alessio
