Genre Categories
I have some Questions and Bug Reports regarding the Genres and Categories.

At first I have to tell you, there is a mistake in the German translation of the Drop Down Menu of the List manager for Cateories.
Clicking the List Manager Icon, the menu shows twice "Genres bearbeiten..." where the first one should be "Kategorien bearbeiten..."

2. In the treeview in the main window beneath Genre, the first folder has no name. I think I figured out, that all the films from the database, for which there are no information imported and no genres marked go into that folder. It would be helpfull naming the folder in a clear way, to indicate the purpose of that folder.

But my questions are concerning your system of Genres and Categories. I found somewhere in the forum an remark of you, that Genres are gernerally importet from internet and that in categories I can define my owne Subdivisions.

That leaves me with some questions:

1.If I create either a new Category or Genre, it doesn't show as an folder on the treeview list on the left side.
(Apart from one new folder beneath Genre, for which I don't even know anymore how I made it. Because it is neither in my Categories nor in my Genre manager listed.)

2.Opening the Genre List Manager, there are no entries. The same goes for the "Edit Audio" and "Edit Country". When opening other List Managers, there are already entries. Where is the difference? As Genres, Countries and Audio informations are allready filled in moviecards, they should show in the editors, shouldn't they?

3.If I would manage to create a new Category, where would I find the Category folders on the treeview? Beneath the Gerne folder as the Genres or at another place.

4.When editing a movie, where can I enter the categories, I don't find any field for that. Or how do I asign categories to my movies?

5.Some movies are listed in several SubGenres, like "Mystery/ Thriller". The Information is filled in by the webscript. But when sorting with the Genre treeview I don't find that movie neither in Mystery nor Thriller.
Shouldn't a movie be listed in all Genres, it belongs to? Or are the SubGenres ignored when sorting with the treeview? Which would be a shame. As sorting by clicking the treeview folders is quicker, then using the search field, where there is the option to search an list by Subgenres. Maybe you could give the option on how the sorting by clicking the treeview works. Either with an extra option on top of the treeview "Genre/SubGenre" or by using the same settings as for the search field.
And I don't think that the custom group sorting is doing what I wish. There I could select Genere and Subgenre, but that would leave me with an tree, where each topfolder has several sub folders.
I would just like to find my movie which has as Genre: "Drama" and as SubGenre: "Mystery/ Thriller" in all the folders Drama, Mystery and Thriller.

6.Belonging to 5. It would be great, if a movie could be listet in several Genres! Is there a way to do this? And as well in several Categories.

Are you shure about that?
There is an unnamed field, but it doesn't show anything in it. Even when I have an Category assigned. It shows the Category on the quick edit and I can sort by it, but nothing is shown in the normal edit view.

In "my" normal edit window the field is not hidden, only the field name.

If it is a feature, I don't see any reason why it is only accessable by quickedit and not by normal edit mode.

No that's not true. Even in the normal edit mode you can type into the category field or - when there are entries in the category list - you can select the right category by dropdown selection.

Hi Mawu
you are right and i managed to move the categroy field in the quickedit view to the main tab. that helps a lot.
But for

In the normal edit window the field is located under the marked/seen checkboxes on the first tab. I don't see any difficulties.
i belief you don't see any difficulties, because there is nothing to see. Its hidden.
Or is there a way to write to a hidden field?
Wouldn't it be better to make it visible? What use are features, which are hidden?
If it is a feature, I don't see any reason why it is only accessable by quickedit and not by normal edit mode.

Thanks, I've been trying to figure out where the Catagory field was used for a couple days now. But finding it so well hidden and difficult to get to, I probably will never use it.

In quickedit window you can put that field whereever you want. In the normal edit window the field is located under the marked/seen checkboxes on the first tab. I don't see any difficulties.

As for what I would use it for is easy. I have a large collection of TV shows that I've recorded or purchased over the years. Genre only tells you something about the content, it does not tell you about the program as it relates to what kind of program it is such as "Series", "Series from the 60's", "Series from the 70's", "TV Special", "News", "TV Movie", "History Program" and so on.

Oh well, I'll have to find another way to achieve this objective...

Thank You Mawu,

I know that I have to categorize my movies, as I indicated in my first post I have read Alessio remark somewhere in the forum.

But it is made rather dificult to categorize my Movies, as it is very hard to find out how to do it.
And a hidden field in the edit window is not helping with this.
Couldn't it be made visible in the future?

And thank you for your tip. I managed to change the quickedit layout and put the category field under the genre field.

It's up to you to categorize your movies.

quote:
Why is it not shown on the normal editing view?

There is no label available in the edit window but the field is localized under the marked/seen checkboxes in the "movie" tab.

quote:
It is only seen in the Quick Edit Mode under DVD/VHS.

That's right, but you can customize the quickedit view (right-click into the quickedit window opens the customization menue; when you change the layout please do not forget to save the changes)

I even found the Category field, but could it have been better hidden?
It is only seen in the Quick Edit Mode under DVD/VHS.
Why is it not shown on the normal editing view? Some kind of hide an seek? javascript:insertsmilie('')
Wouldn't it be better on the first side under the Genre Dropdown fields, as it is supposed to be something similar?
Or could you explain the purpose of the field a bit more, Alessio?
zukkara Posted - 13 Jun 2010 : 14:47:31
Thank You Mawu!
That worked.

But still my question, why don't I see my newly created genres or categories in the treeview on the left side?

Ok, I found out, there isn't shown an directory with a newly created genre, as long as no film was signed to the genre.

A bit disdurbing. Some kind of documentation would be great (some note in the listmanager like: shows only if at least one film ist assigned to it), or at least some answer by Alessio here.

But what do I do with a category? How do I assign a film to a category? I tryed the Genre field, but that doesn't do a thing. So what to do with it. At the moment it seems to be a useless feature, or not?
Any help is very appreciated!
