Hello everyone esp. Alessio,
I've been a registered user for a few months now and have finally tried XMM5 alongside my current 4.8.
It looks very promising, I like the personal rating and the movie cards which I presume you will easily be able to create your own with an HTML editor. I've spent a bit of time playing around and worked out how to various things which are not immeiately apparent (to me)like setting the default import script and other things that are different from XMM4.x but there are enough problems to keep me using 4.8 for the moment, these are mainly to do with importing new movies. I also have some suggestions to improve XMM.
Firstly let me quickly explain my movie collection set-up, they are all either on one hard drive on the LAN or stored flight cases with the numbered inserts and I have been assigning the name of each box and the number inside to each movie. I keep track of these with XMM and other users in the house can browse the movies with XMM Launcher so that they cannot edit my database. This works pretty well although they cannot locate which box a DVD would be in. I am hoping that maybe the 'Media Centre Mode' of XMM5 will allow them to use XMM5 to browse and locate a DVD or launch a file without allowing write access to the database.
In the meantime XMMLauncher still seems to work with the new XMM5 database, good!
One thing I notice is the renaming of fields, CDLabel becomes MediaLabel and BoxID becomes CatalogNo. Since when importing from hard drive XMM automatically sets the MediaLabel to the name of my movie hard drive (Good!) I intend to use this as the name of where to find a particular movie so that it will either point to the hard drive or the name of the box containing the movie. I can then enter a number in CatalogNo to locate the movie inside the box. So for this XMM5 is perfect for what I want. But here are my problems.
Adding Files: I like the option of defining which file types to scan for but would it be possible to also set a default directory to scan?
When scanning is complete all movies are selected, you can highlight them with shift/ctrl as normal but there is no way to use this to de/select the checkboxes of a range or individual movies you want to import. It wants to import all movies again. Is there a way to select only new movies?
When importing .MP4 files 'Media' is left blank although I have a custom icon added for 'MP4'
Movies List Grid: Someone has already asked for removal of MovieID column but can I just say 'me too' ;-) Actually, hang on, I've just noticed you can change the column order by dragging and dropping, so I can now put MovieID at the end and hide it there. That will do me! I hope it remembers this when I shut down and restart.
I can add whatever fields I want to the grid and sort the listing by clicking on the column header so that I can list all movies by (eg) date of insert but I cannot sort by 'Media' type or by 'Personal Rating' Can this be done?
After importing my old database 'WebImported' is set to False for everything, can I change this to True?
Can I create my own custom icon graphics for Media Types?
The other importing problems are related to the IMDB script but I will list them here.
When a list of possible matches to a movie are shown it no longer gives the year of production after the movie title, since many movies have the same name it is quicker to see the year and be able to select the correct movie without previewing every possible match.
Is there a way to select which default fields like director, country etc. will be imported?
The movie length does not work and is sometimes fractional figures.
Sorry to rabble on a bit, keep up the good work on XMM, it may not be perfect yet but it is by far the closest I have tried and the most powerful program of this type I have found.
Gordon.
