The program seems to want me click for each and every movie.
Thanks.

Here is what I am trying to do. I have about 200 movies on a hard drive. I want to add them to a database, all at once, without having to sit in front of the computer and add each one individually. I also want xmm to use the name of the folder as the movie name.

Well yes, I did that. Perhaps I'm not explaining right. It's the next step that is not working. If a list of movie titles was all I wanted, I could just read them out of my file manager.

It's the downloading of info that seems no to function, at least not as it otta. I want to add all the info and movie posters etc.

Is there not a way to do this more simply, so one doesn't need to be a bloody programmer to figure it out.

Sorry, but I have a headache from banging my head in frustration.

First off, welcome to the world of movie cataloging. Get used to banging your head against something.

FWIW and with respect to all of the other more experienced users in this forum, here are a few things I learned as a recent new user to XMM. YMMV, but maybe it will help.

Spend some time getting used to XMM. Get a feel for it by setting up a test database of 3 or 4 movies to get things started. This program can be overwhelming in the beginning; what it lacks in user-friendly-ness, it makes up for in robustness. For me, it took some time to get used to all the different tabs and views.

IMO, most of your effort should go into cleaning up your folder(movie)titles- this will help the search/scrape process find the correct movie info.

Example: Funny People (2009)

Since you've already scanned your hard drive, this is how I would suggest you proceed.

Fair warning: 1) there are probably many ways to do this, but it's how I got started and, 2) some trial and error will probably be necessary for you to figure out what works best.

While in the Main program tab view, highlight at least 3 movies and click 'Update Selected'.

The Magic Script Import Engine window will open to the 'Import With Scripts' page tab (I personally wouldn't use the more advanced 'Import with CHAINS of Scripts' until you get a better feel for magic scripts in general).

Start by selecting a single source (I would suggest MovieDB.org for mainstream movies).

Before you click 'Start', TAKE NOTE OF THE OPTIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE, THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT if you want automate the information collection process. For me, I only had to check the first box.

This is probably enough to get started and good luck! Hopefully some of the other more experienced users will jump to offer up their suggestions as well.

Well, Goes to 11, I think you've earned 100 points
That's exactly the same way I begun and still do. Except the fact that I added each movie one by one with directly importing the data.
As addition I would suggest that Rickkins at first tests a few scripts to find out which one fits his needs the best. Maybe by having a look at this site http://xmm.a.wiki-site.com/index.php/Overview
For the fact that some scripts, especially the imdb one, take a lot of time for getting all info I always update only up to 50 or 100 movies at once. And I always check the advanced options, too. So not to import as example 999 pics by the imdb complete script. That would exceed my limits...

To the import options
There are two different windows for. At first the settings for MagicScript itself and second for each single script.
For importing info I would recommend these settings but play a little with the combination to find out what they effect:
1. Options for MagicScript (the blue down arrow top left of XMM): here are 11 settings. Keep checked: 2-5 and 7-9. No. 10 and 11 are affecting the script options.
2. Below of the scripts on chosing for import: here are 4 settings. I only have checked No. 3 but try what's best for your need.
The Advanced Script Options are part of the second window. Here you can set which fields you want to import and much more important the way of importing (I don't know how to explain this the best): always keep using Directlinks and chose if and how many pics you want to be downloaded. Keep in mind that these options are different for each script!

In order to achieve what is possible, you have to try the impossible over and over again.

Thanks for the help guys. I ended up having to uninstall the latest xmm, and go back a couple versions, and then it worked. Perhaps I should have also mentioned that I was using win8....

Anyhoo, all good.

Thanks.

The newest release didn't work under Win8 but an earlier one?
That you have to explain, please.
Which release worked last and what's the problem in detail? As you wrote previously the problem seemed to be wrong settings...

Very buggy software. No matter what settings I used, it would not respond properly.
I rolled back to 7.2.1.2 and I was able to mass update, with perhaps 70% accurate completion.

Tying to individually update the ones it missed is an exercise in extreme frustration. Incomplete results. Incomprehensible results. Empty results.

I'll give you an example.
I am trying to manually update "The Wedding Singer".
What do the scripts give me...??? "Antres tis hronias 2009"
I mean, seriously...???

Update: In have just found that using dvdempire script solves the above problem.

I had an issue with EMM finding the wrong movie occasionally when I first started and then discovered that if you use the IMDB link and set your preferences in the script to read the link from the NFO file you always get the right one.
Now I include a NFO file named the same as the movie in the folder and have the IMDB link inside it and select the option to read the Direct link from custom field 8
During the import it ALWAYS gets the correct movie and also when you are watching the movie on a network connected device you can quickly go to that link from the device.
