When I try and click on device scanner to bring it to the foreground, XMM hangs. Only the border of Device Scanner is visible and XMM will not respond to keystroke/mouse. This has been happening for many releases. |

I never had such a problem. So I can't say anything to it. I would make a manually backup of your WHOLE database http://www.binaryworks.it/cgi-bin/data/wiki/doku.php?id=backup_database and uninstall XMM. Then load the full release from here: http://www.binaryworks.it/extrememoviemanager/download.aspx After a fresh installation I hope that everything will work again.
As hint: For me every opening of a window in XMM like the edit window I had to wait "years" until it opened. That was under Win7-x64 and the 64-bit version of XMM. So if you don't have a very huge database I always would prefer XMM 32-bit. State of the moment! |

I'm running the 32 bit version. I have 10,000 plus titles in XMM. |

It's depending on the length of the database. There are several topics on that here in the forum. But I think the 1 GiB limit is relevant. But to your problem... as said above I would try a fresh installation of XMM. |

full re-install appears to have worked - fingers crossed.
nope - it looks like the option causing the problem is under "options", "device scanner", "Do Not Add File if Already in Database."
It looks like when I turn this option on, trying to bring the device scanner to the foreground causes the "hang".
perhaps there is a problem when the device scanner tries to look up movies to see if they already are in the database? |

Strange. I must say that I have the 8.4.3.0 release and that works without problems on that function. Please try to disable automatic device scanning and start it manually to see if the error occurs then, too. Maybe you are searching for a network ressource then it will take sometimes time to recognize/read all folders. |

more: it appears the problem is related to my TV collection. When I manually scan to add movies everything is OK. When I manually scan to add TV the device scanner hangs immediately, taking xmm with it.
is there any way to export my entire collection and then import it back into a fresh, empty DB? I suspect there is some sort of DB corruption behind this problem. quite often a low level export/import can solve db corruption issues. It don't want to have to rescan my entire collection from an empty db. |

An import is not possible. Maybe you can do a check with Access itself "Compact and Repair".
For TV shows I don't use the device scanner as it is not possible to change the episode files in db when they are moved to another folder and everytime I would search for new shows/episodes all the already imported files are shown again to import. I always add TVShow manually by title. Then I add the episodes from the desired folder by the device scanner. It's for me the best way. |

I've already done the access repair many times.
it seems strange xmm doesn't provide a convenient way to import/export the database as a csv, to handle repairs where the db may have been corrupted. |

On that I have to admit that I don't have enough knowledge to say something about. I only can advice to write an email to Ale and ask him directly. |

more:
I left the device scanner for add TV shows "hung" instead of restarting XMM. After about 1 hour the the device scanner screen displayed and I was able to import TV shows.
It appears that whatever is going on inside XMM for scanning TV shows is not a hang, but something that takes a very long time when one first starts the TV scanner.
Since you don't normally use the TV scanner, could you please run a test. Bring up the scanner for "add tv shows" and see how it behaves for you? |

more: importing TV with the device scanner has serious problems. editing the imported entries from the scanner, the "files" column is blank, the episode title contains the actual file name (eg test.avi) and the main title contains the directory structure.
has anyone been using this feature? it looks like it needs serious debugging. the device scanner for TV is importing into the wrong columns. I can't see how anyone can use this? it makes XMM look like a bit of a joke! |

As I already have said - TVShows and the Device Scanner are an incompatible pair of functions and I fully agree with your comment. Therefor I never have used them together except of the above described way. That does the job for me. |
